Everything You Need to Welcome Your New Pup Home

Bringing home a new puppy is exciting, joyful, and let's be honest—a little overwhelming. Whether you're a first-time dog owner or it's been a while since you've had a pup in the house, it's essential to be prepared.

We've assembled this Puppy Essentials Checklist to help you get started on the right paw. It covers food, grooming, bedding, toys, and safety, and is a must-have for all new puppy parents.

1. Food & Feeding Supplies

Your puppy's nutrition lays the foundation for lifelong health. Always start with the food your breeder has been feeding, and transition slowly if you plan to switch brands.

Must-haves:

  • High-quality puppy food (ask us for recommendations)

  • Food and water bowls (non-slip, stainless steel or ceramic)

  • Treats for training (small, soft, and puppy-safe)

  • Measuring scoop or cup to ensure proper portions

  • Slow-feeder bowl (optional for fast eaters)

2. Grooming Supplies on the Puppy Essentials Checklist

Golden Retrievers and Doodles require regular grooming to stay healthy and comfortable. Start early to get them used to being brushed and handled.

Must-haves:

  • Puppy-safe shampoo and conditioner

  • Soft-bristle brush or slicker brush (breed-specific)

  • Nail clippers or a grinder

  • Dog toothbrush and toothpaste

  • Towels or grooming wipes for quick cleanups

3. Bedding & Crate

Puppies need a cozy, safe place to sleep—and crate training is one of the best ways to build routines and reduce accidents.

Must-haves:

  • Crate (appropriately sized for your pup to grow into)

  • Soft, washable bedding or crate pad

  • A baby gate or playpen to limit access in the house

  • A blanket or item that smells like home (we often send one!)

4. Toys & Enrichment

Play is critical for development, bonding, and burning energy. Puppies explore the world with their mouths, so variety and durability matter.

Must-haves:

  • Chew toys (for teething relief)

  • Plush toys (great for comfort and snuggles)

  • Puzzle toys or food-dispensing toys for mental stimulation

  • Balls or tug toys for interactive play

5. Collar, Leash & ID

Start leash training early—even if it's just around the house. Make sure your pup is always identifiable.

Must-haves:

  • Adjustable collar with ID tag

  • Leash (4 to 6 feet, not retractable)

  • Harness (for walks as your puppy grows)

  • Microchip (ask your vet about this during your first visit)

6. Safety & Cleanup

Puppies are curious and can get into anything. Creating a safe environment is key for both you and your pup.

Must-haves:

  • Pet-safe cleaning supplies (for potty accidents)

  • Puppy pads (if you're using them during training)

  • Poop bags

  • First-aid kit (basic supplies + contact info for your vet)

  • Secure storage for food, medications, and cleaning products

Final Thoughts

Preparing your home with these essentials sets your puppy—and your family—up for a smoother transition. Remember, part of raising a well-adjusted dog is consistency, patience, and a whole lot of love.
